"Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph to make preparations in Goshen" (Genesis 46:28). "A Midrashic comment: He sent Judah ahead to establish a house of Torah study from which teaching would go forth" (Rashi).

"Should we withdraw our children from the public schools and establish schools of our own as the Catholics are doing? This plan, even if it were practical, should be banished from our minds. What we want in this country is not Jews who can successfully keep up their Jewishness in a few large ghettos, but men and women who have grown up in freedom and can assert themselves wherever they are. A parochial system of education among the Jews would be fatal to such hopes" (Samson Benderly, founder and director of the New York Bureau of Jewish Education, 1908).

1654 Twenty-three Jewish refugees arrive in Dutch New Amsterdam (later known as New York). In their footsteps follow thousands of Jewish immigrants of Sephardic heritage. They have come to a land where they are able to practice their religion openly, without fear of an inquisition. Their focus is on avodah (service of Hashem). One of their first acts is to establish a house of worship. Within a course of several decades, palatial synagogues are established in every city with a Jewish community. While many of these edifices continue to stand, they search for the progeny of those original founders who no longer pass through their doors.

1800's A major influx of German Jews begins to arrive on the shores of the United States. They stress gemilut chasadim, acts of kindness and charity. They establish Jewish hospitals, old age homes, and a whole array of social services to serve the Jewish community. These institutions continue to serve the Jewish community to this day, but many of the descendants of those who toiled to build them, no longer identify themselves as part of the Jewish community.

1944 A national organization is established in the United States with the specific goal of making Jewish education (Torah) available to every Jewish child. Just over fifty years later, its founders can take pride in not only their children, but their grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well, as they continue to carry the banner of Jewish identity and knowledge to the next generation.
